How should a ring fit?
Snug at the base, a little push over the knuckle, and no spinning. Here's how to judge it, and how band width shifts the size you order.
The three-point fit test
- On: the ring slides over the knuckle with slight resistance.
- Worn: it stays put when you shake your hand and doesn't rotate far.
- Off: it comes off with a gentle twist, without soap.
Band width and knuckles: see how they change your size
Your measured size is for a thin band. Change the ring and watch the suggestion move. This is the rule of thumb many jewelers use; always follow a retailer's own advice if they give it.

Resizing: what's possible
Jewelers typically stretch or compress a plain band by up to about half a size, and cut and solder to go further, usually up to two sizes. Beyond that, or for rings with stones set all the way round, a remake may be needed. Tungsten carbide and ceramic cannot be resized at all; many brands offer an exchange instead.
Seasonal swings
Many people wear a size larger in summer. If your rings are loose in winter but tight in summer, fit for summer and use a removable sizing aid in winter; a ring that is too small in the heat is the one that gets stuck.

How do I tell if a ring is too tight?
It needs twisting or soap to get off, leaves a deep red mark, or your fingertip changes colour. Fingers swell later in the day and in heat, so a ring that is only just comfortable in the morning is probably too small.
How do I tell if a ring is too loose?
It turns around so the stone faces sideways, slides past the knuckle without any push, or falls off when your hands are cold or wet.
Can every ring be resized?
Plain gold, silver and platinum bands usually go up or down one or two sizes. Eternity bands with stones all round, tension settings, and most tungsten, ceramic and titanium rings generally cannot be resized, so size those carefully.
What can I do if a ring is slightly too big?
A jeweler can fit sizing beads or a sizing bar inside the band. Clear silicone ring adjusters are a cheap temporary fix.
