Average ring size for women and men
Sizing guides from US jewelers commonly quote US 6–7 as typical for women and US 9–10 for men. Those are starting points for a guess, never a substitute for measuring.

What changes the size you actually need
- Which finger. The ring finger is usually half a size to a size larger than the little finger and smaller than the middle finger.
- Which hand. The dominant hand is often slightly larger.
- Knuckles. Prominent knuckles push the size up; the ring must pass them.
- Band width. Wide bands fit tighter, so size up about half a size for 6 mm and wider. More in how a ring should fit.
- Climate and season. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold.
Finding someone's ring size secretly
- Borrow a ring they wear on the right finger. Measure the inside diameter, or trace the inside edge on paper, and enter it in the ring size calculator.
- Press it into soap or clay for an impression a jeweler can measure.
- Ask a friend or family member, or look at rings they bought online.
- Try it on your finger. Note where their ring stops on your finger, then match it against the online sizer.
If none of that works, guess on the larger side and buy from a retailer with a free resize. A plain band is easy to resize; eternity bands and some alternative metals are not.
