How to Measure Your Ring Size
Learn professional techniques to accurately measure your ring size at home using everyday items or our printable tools.
Three Easy Methods to Find Your Ring Size
The String or Paper Strip Method
This classic technique uses items you already have at home to measure your finger's circumference accurately.
What You'll Need
- A piece of string, dental floss, or thin strip of paper
- A ruler with millimeter markings
- A pen or marker
Steps
- Wrap the string or paper strip around the base of your finger (where you'll wear the ring).
- Mark the point where the string or paper overlaps to form a complete circle.
- Lay the string or paper flat and measure the length in millimeters with a ruler.
- Use our ring size calculator to convert this circumference measurement to your ring size.
Pro Tip: Measure your finger at the end of the day when it's at its largest. Avoid measuring when your hands are cold, as fingers can shrink by up to half a size.
The Existing Ring Method
If you have a ring that already fits well on the intended finger, this is the most accurate home method.
Steps
- Select a ring that fits comfortably on the finger you want to measure.
- Place the ring flat on a ruler or use calipers if available.
- Measure the inside diameter of the ring in millimeters.
- Enter this diameter into our ring size calculator to find your size.
Important: Make sure to measure the inside diameter (the inner edge), not the outer edge of the ring.

Important Considerations for Accurate Sizing
Temperature Matters
Your fingers expand and contract with temperature changes. Measure when your hands are at normal room temperature for the most accurate reading.
Consider Your Knuckle
If you have larger knuckles, the ring needs to slide over them comfortably. Measure both the base of your finger and your knuckle, then choose a size in between.
Ring Width Factor
Wider bands (6mm or more) fit tighter than narrow bands. If you're choosing a wide band, consider going up a half size from your normal measurement.
Measure Multiple Times
Take measurements at different times of day over a few days. Your finger size can vary, so measuring multiple times ensures accuracy.
Dominant Hand Difference
Fingers on your dominant hand are typically slightly larger (about a quarter to half size) than your non-dominant hand.
Lifestyle Considerations
Consider your daily activities. If you work with your hands frequently or exercise often, you may want a slightly looser fit for comfort.
Between Sizes? Here's How to Decide
Size UP if:
- ✓ You have larger knuckles
- ✓ You're choosing a wide band (6mm+)
- ✓ Your fingers tend to swell (hot climate, pregnancy, exercise)
- ✓ You prefer a comfortable, looser fit
- ✓ This is for your dominant hand
Size DOWN if:
- ✓ Your knuckles are the same size as your finger base
- ✓ You're choosing a thin band (under 4mm)
- ✓ You live in a cold climate
- ✓ You prefer a snug, secure fit
- ✓ The ring has a heavy gemstone (needs tighter fit)
