How to Measure Ring Size
Learn professional techniques to accurately measure your ring size at home.
Three Easy Methods
String or Dental Floss Method
The most common and accessible method for measuring at home.
What You Need:
- String, dental floss, or thin strip of paper
- Pen or marker
- Ruler or measuring tape (mm)
Steps:
- Wrap the string around the base of your finger (where the ring will sit)
- Mark where the string overlaps with a pen
- Lay the string flat and measure the length in millimeters
- This is your ring circumference - enter it into our calculator
Pro Tip: Wrap the string snugly but not too tight. It should slide over your knuckle with slight resistance.
Measure an Existing Ring
Use a ring that already fits well on the correct finger.
Steps:
- Find a ring that fits the finger you want to size
- Place the ring on a ruler
- Measure the inside diameter in millimeters (edge to edge)
- Enter the diameter into our calculator
Important: Different fingers have different sizes! Make sure to measure a ring from the same finger.

β οΈ Important Considerations
π‘οΈ Temperature Effects
Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold. Measure at room temperature, preferably at the end of the day when fingers are their largest.
π€ Knuckle Size Matters
If your knuckle is much larger than your finger base, size up slightly. The ring needs to slide over your knuckle but shouldn't spin freely.
π Ring Width Consideration
Wide bands (6mm+) feel tighter than narrow bands. Consider sizing up by 0.5 for rings wider than 6mm.
π― Measure Multiple Times
Take 2-3 measurements and use the average. This reduces error and ensures accuracy.
π Dominant Hand Difference
Your dominant hand's fingers are often slightly larger due to increased use. Always measure the specific finger you'll wear the ring on.
ποΈ Lifestyle Factors
Weight changes, pregnancy, and salt intake affect finger size. If you're expecting changes, consider sizing for your future size.
π€ Between Sizes? Here's What to Do
π Size UP if:
- β The ring is a wide band (6mm or more)
- β You have large knuckles
- β You live in a warm climate
- β Your fingers swell regularly
- β You prefer a looser fit
π Size DOWN if:
- β The ring is a thin band (under 3mm)
- β Your knuckle is similar size to base
- β You live in a cold climate
- β You prefer a snug fit
- β You have slim fingers
